TIMBERLANE REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

June 2008

TRHS Films Recognized  Two short films produced by Timberlane students and faculty have received honors recently. “Hometown Heroes,” a documentary about two local World War II veterans, filmed and edited by juniors Maree Magliochetti and Luke Botting, received a Jury Award in the NH Short Film Festival, organized by nationally-known filmmaker Ken Burns. Maree’s and Luke’s film was in competition with others by both college and high school students from across the state. In addition, a film on the annual Lumberjack Festival in Berlin, and the historical background of the lumbering industry, created by a team of TRHS staff (Mr. Silveira, Mr. Morse, Mr. Strainge, Mr. Zanello, and Mr. Wilder), has been selected to be part of the NH Public Television Teacher Series. This film will have a specific website built around it, with lesson plans and links for NH teachers to use. The film is also in the running for an award from the National Association for State and Local History, and may be chosen for showing in prime time on Channel 11.

Senior Events  Members of the Class of 2008 have received packets of information relating to the remaining senior class events, including the required Senior Breakfast on Saturday, June 7, graduation practices on June 9 and 10, the scholarship awards on June 11, and graduation itself, set for 5:30 PM on Friday, June 13. Please note: In the event of inclement weather, graduation will be held in the Gym. Each senior will have only TWO tickets for family or friends to enter the Gym. Due to the size of the class and fire regulations, we have to limit admittance. Other family and guests will be able to watch the entire ceremony in the Performing Arts Center.

Model United Nations  Our Model UN team came in first in the New England Regional Championship held at Northeastern University last month. In addition to receiving several individual awards, the team received the top trophy, the Secretary General’s Award. Special thanks and our deep appreciation go to Mr. Tony Hanscome, whose long and dedicated leadership of this program will be sorely missed when he retires this month.

NECAP Testing Goes Well  In mid-May, we conducted the Science portion of the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP), the state testing required of all juniors. This spring, we made a concerted effort to ensure that students were aware of the importance of these tests. After a breakfast served in the cafeteria, the actual testing was conducted in the gym, without the disruption of other students passing between classes. We had a separate testing room for students who require a modified test. We hope the results will reflect our students’ best efforts.

Cannon Selected Sophomore Emily Cannon has been chosen by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association as a delegate to the National Federation 2008 “Take Part – Get Set For Life” conference, to be held in Indianapolis and July 17-18. Emily is one of six New Hampshire delegates.

National Honor Society  The TRHS chapter of the National Honor Society recently held its annual induction of new members. I was very impressed with the list of accomplishments of these underclassmen, and we will be posting the full list of students and their achievements on the school website. I hope you will look at the roster, and realize the quality of student leadership it represents.

In closing out this school year, I also thank each one of you – students, parents, faculty, and staff – for all the ways in which you contributed to building a positive learning environment here at Timberlane. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer!
