Academic Expectations

Timberlane students will write effectively.

It is an academic expectation that Timberlane students will write effectively. The Writing Traits scoring process is being administered by teachers in different disciplines. Most courses will only be scoring in two or three areas aligned to their discipline's characteristics. Beginning with the 4th quarter progress reports (2007), the TRHS faculty will contribute comments on each student's writing in their respective classes. Thereafter, the writing assessment scores will be given to students quarterly through specific course work or common prompts and reported out through progress reports during the 2nd and 4th quarter of each year. The scores may or may not be reflected specifically in the student’s grade.  Some teachers may choose to include students’ communication skills more generally in a participation or presentation grade.

The pieces scored will differ as narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. We expect that our students will initially demonstrate greater strengths in some areas rather than others. The scoring and reporting provides students with formative assessments and continuous feedback on their writing strengths and weaknesses in a variety of different areas. These writing scores are progressive and not a final evaluation of their writing ability.

All students will be coached towards at least an effective score of 4 in each of the Trait areas. The scores assist teachers, counselors, and our school with monitoring students' writing progress. We are making regular efforts to improve their performance as their ability to write and communicate well will influence their success in every career.
