The Bylaws and Constitution

of the

SOCIEDAD HONORARIA HISPÁNICA

Timberlane Regional High School

Plaistow, NH

 

Article I. Name and Classification

Section 1. The name of this organization is the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, also known as the Spanish Honor Society, and shall be referred to in this document as "the Society."

Section 2. The purpose of the Society is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote continuity of interest in Hispanic studies.

Section 3. The name of the Society’s chapter at Timberlane Regional High School is "Garcilaso de la Vega," named for the Spanish poet.

Section 4. The person in charge of the Chapter is the Chapter Sponsor (also referred to as "Advisor").

 

Article II. Qualifications for Chapter Membership

Section 1. To be eligible for the Society, students must meet all of the following criteria.

bulletStudent must be actively enrolled in a Spanish class.
bulletStudent must be enrolled in the 3rd semester of an accelerated class, or 5th semester of a CCP class, or higher.
bulletStudent must be a sophomore or higher.
bulletTransfer students must have spent one full semester in a Spanish class at Timberlane before eligibility.
bulletStudents in an accelerated Spanish class must have an average of 87% or better over the last 6 quarters.
bulletStudents in a CCP class must have an average of 90% or better over the last 6 quarters.
bulletStudent can never have earned a grade lower than 80% at any time in their Spanish classes.
bulletStudent must plan on continuing to the highest level of Spanish offered at Timberlane.
bulletStudent will demonstrate good character, seriousness of purpose, cooperation, honesty, service and commitment to others.

Section 2. Each student’s application will be endorsed by his/her current Spanish teacher.

 

Article III. Application and Initiation

Section 1. After the first semester grades are published, eligible students must complete and submit their applications for admission by the stated due date.

Section 2. Acceptance letters will be distributed approximately one month prior to the Induction Ceremony.

Section 3. Inductees must RSVP to the Society’s Advisor and are required to attend the Induction Ceremony practices.

Section 4. The Induction Ceremony will be sometime in March/April.

 

Article IV. Qualifications for Continued Membership.

Section 1. Each year members must engage in activities in the following categories: Academic Commitment, Society Commitment, and Community Commitment.

Section 2. Academic Commitment consists of the following: current enrollment in a Spanish class (unless student has already completed the highest level of Spanish offered at Timberlane see Section 6, below), maintenance of 80% or better in Spanish,

Section 3. Society Commitment consists of attending all meetings of the Society, and participating in atleast one fundraising activity per school year.

Section 4. Community Commitment consists of tutoring (as needed), and participating in at least 2 of the following community service activities: Spirit Week, Induction Ceremony help, Language Night, and Teaching Enrichment Program (Elementary School), and any other activities that the Society decides to undertake.

Section 5. Students must continue to show academic integrity and character based on no recorded incidents of cheating, plagiarism, misconduct, insubordination or intentional dishonesty and adherence to all policies and procedures as stated in the TRHS Student Handbook.

Section 6. An Associate Member is defined as a student who has completed the highest level of Spanish offered at TRHS but has not yet graduated. Associate Members many not vote, hold office, be eligible to receive scholarships or travel awards of the National Society.

 

Article V. Probation and Revocation of Membership.

Section 1. Members will be placed on probation for any of the following reasons:

bulletQuarterly grade in Spanish is lower than 80%. The student must improve the grade in one quarter, or membership will be revoked.
bullet(2) unexcused absences from the Society’s meetings. Excused absences are due to illness, school field trips, doctor’s appointments, or family emergencies. Students who have an excused absence should see the advisor prior to the meeting, or within 1 day of returning to school with an excused absence.
bulletFailure to participate in fundraising activity.
bulletFailure to be available for tutoring.
bulletFailure to participate in the Community Commitment activities.

Section 2. Society membership will be revoked for the following reasons:

bulletMember misses a 3rd meeting (unexcused).
bulletMember fails to improve grade in Spanish class for second quarter.
bulletMember consistently does not fulfill Society and Community Commitments.
bulletMember is no longer enrolled in Spanish class.
bulletMember requests revocation in writing.

Section 3. A student may be also be placed on probation, or suspended from membership entirely, due to a major disciplinary offense or other behavior deemed inappropriate or not demonstrating good character. Such action may be taken by the Sponsor at his/her discretion. The student will be informed in writing of the action taken.

 

Article VI. Officers and Duties

Section 1. There are five officers of the Society: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Community Service Director. The officers must be enrolled in a Spanish class and be a member in good standing in the Society in order to hold office.

Section 2. Officers apply for their positions in the spring to serve in the position for the following school year. The Sponsor shall appoint the officers, with input from Spanish teachers, administrators and current officers. The term of office is for (1) school year.

Section 3. The duties of the officers are as follows: act as the role-models and leaders within the Society for learning & promoting Spanish; train in-coming officers; work together as a group as well as work with members-at-large on all projects, fundraisers, etc.

Section 4. Officers are expected to attend the following meetings:

bulletOne meeting/month (minimum) that includes all members
bulletOne meeting/month (minimum) with the officers and advisor
bulletInduction Ceremony practices – note: speeches for Induction Ceremony should be memorized
bulletInduction Ceremony for new members
bulletParticipate and encourage participation in events such as Language Night

Section 5. The role of the President: Chairs meetings; works with other officers & advisor to set agenda for meetings; publishes the agenda for meetings; makes a list of any action items from meetings & gives to advisor; makes arrangements for any guest speakers, etc., writes thank-you notes; communicates with members.

Section 6. The role of the Vice-President: Ensures that announcements are made for meetings & other Society business; ensures that all members have information pertinent to the Society’s rules and business; writes press releases; in the event that the President cannot attend a meeting the VP will conduct the meeting.

Section 7. The role of the Secretary: maintains accurate attendance records; notifies the advisor of any students who are on attendance probation; fills out the letter for probation, obtains advisor signature, makes copies of letters and distributes them; maintains the list of tutor availability, updates it at the beginning of each semester and gives the advisor 7 copies; keeps up-to-date records for each member (survey form).

Section 8. The role of the Treasurer: Obtains permission for fundraising activities via school policy; during a fundraiser, makes daily deposits with the TRHS bookkeeper, notifies the advisor of said deposits; reports on financial status, including such items as – amount still owed, amount outstanding, amount collected.

Section 9. The role of the Community Service Director: Liaison between the Society, Administration and other groups being served, creates plans as needed (if sub-committee is involved, leads this committee), communicates plans, progress and issues, recruits and manages volunteers.

Section 10. If an officer fails to fulfill his/her responsibilities, the officer may be asked to step down before the term has been completed and the Sponsor may appoint a new officer.

Section 11. In the event that an officer cannot fulfill his/her term, s/he must tender a letter of resignation to the Sponsor and the Sponsor will then appoint a replacement.

 

Article VII. Meetings

Section 1. Meetings are to be regularly scheduled by the sponsor and officers. There shall be no less than one meeting per quarter.

Section 2. Meeting schedules shall distributed at the beginning of the school year and posted on the Sponsor’s website.

 

Article VIII. Insignia

Section 1. The insignia of the Society is the official one of the AATSP, as represented on the medals which may be awarded for excellence in Spanish and Portuguese. If pins are desired, they are to be ordered by the Sponsor directly form the official AATSP jeweler as listed in Hispania.

Section 2. The seal of the AATSP is the official seal of the Society, and it may be used in conjunction with any other seal upon approval of the National Council.

Section 3. The motto of the Society is: Todos a una.

Section 4. The colors of the Society are red and gold.

Section 5. The flower of the Society is the carnation.

Section 6. Society emblem patches may be obtained from the National Director for an amount approved by the National Council.

 

Article IX. Emergency Bylaws

Section 1. Additional regulations for facilitating the government of the Society and the activities of the Chapters may be prepared by the National Council whenever the exigencies for such regulations may arise.
